Credit Cards – Why It’s Important To Keep Up With the Latest Deals

credit cardsUnlike a lot of other personal finance bloggers and financial advice, I am not scared of credit cards.  In fact, if you use them properly, they can be very convenient, help you keep track of your budget, and – best of all – help you rack up a lot of rewards!

Even if you already have a few credit cards in your wallet, it’s worth it to do a little window shopping from time to time and see what kind of deals are out there.  Here’s a few reasons why:

Credit Cards Have Many Promotions Available:

Whether you’re looking to consolidate your debt, save for retirement or put money aside for a deposit on a home – you could find a low-interest credit card to suit your needs. Well-established companies like MBNA often have exclusive website deals – such as 0 percent balance transfers for a set period of time – so it’s worth doing your homework online. As many of these promotions come and go, it’s wise to stay alert to make sure you don’t miss them.

You Can Benefit from the Rewards and Points:

Let’s face it; there are some promotional deals that are very much out in the public domain – but there are some that are exclusive to certain banking groups and websites. This may mean you get more competitive or introductory offers than anywhere else on the web, or it could mean you’re entitled to points and rewards. With football credit cards, for example, you’ll earn reward points every time you spend, which can be used to claim special merchandise, football experiences and much, much more.

You Could Find the Perfect Card for You:

Are you receiving reward points you’ll never use? If so, it might be worth changing to other types of rewards-based credit cards. The right card will give you high-street vouchers, air miles and other rewards that will actually come in handy and will help you get the most for your money. What’s more, if you support a certain sports club or charity, reputable credit card companies will make a contribution to your favourite team or organisation every time you spend – at no extra cost to you. With a winter of sports ahead including the new Premier League season, a specialist card could be just what you need.

You Can Compare and Contrast Credit Cards:

Even if you have one or a few credit cards already, it’s always wise to see what’s available. Credit card providers like MBNA allow you to compare credit cards online and will give you all the information you require. While some providers have made it easier than ever to compare credit cards across their whole range, others will look at the entire market – and will give you a valuable insight into the banking world.

For many of us, browsing the latest credit card deals might seem like a chore – but you could get yourself a better deal.

Readers – How often do you shop around for new or better credit card offers?  Where do you go to find the best possible offers?

Rewards credit cards let you earn cash back, free travel, or other perks when you use your card. Choose rewards you’ll actually use and watch out for cards with high annual fees or interest rates.

I’m a big fan of the cash back or gift card ones. I like free travel and other perks, but I find the cash back the most useful. Agreed on the annual fee – its only acceptable if you absolutely plan to use the card for a reward of much greater value.

  3. I think what happens with credit cards is that you tend to think you have more money in your account than you do. Using budgeting tools will help with that, but I just avoid it all together until I get my finances more in line. I agree that you can rack up rewards points, cash back, etc. with cards and it does protect from certain consumer fraud. You just have to be very good with your finances for it to fully benefit you, IMHO.

You’re absolutely right Ron – it takes discipline to use a credit card. Regularly having Mint or some other software email you your account balances is a great way to stay on top of how much you’ve spent so you know if you are getting too close to your budget and need to cut back.
