It was only a month ago that Mrs MMD finally decided after all this time to get a smart phone with a data plan and the whole nine yards. So we signed up for a new plan from Sprint and things were going good. Then out of nowhere this week, she’s no longer able to make or receive calls anymore. So twice I had to call, do the whole pull the battery out and put it back in, and waste a few hours talking with tech support. The end result: The phone still doesn’t work!
As if one phone problem wasn’t enough, then our Vonage router started giving us problems. So I devoted yet another hour on the phone with the Vonage tech support going through their motions as well – pushing the reset button, unhooking cables, etc. Why does it always seem like everything breaks at the same time?
Wednesday is my official one-year blogging anniversary. If it comes as a surprise to you that my blog has been around for one year, than shame on me! It seems this week will be a silent anniversary for me since my blog basically didn’t exist for about the first five months of its career. And it’s all thanks to all the really dumb stuff I did when I first started My Money Design. So for anyone out there just starting out (and for those of you who just want to laugh with me – not at me), here is a tally of all the stupid things I did over the last year and my blogging tips on how you can do better!
This week I am saddened to tell you that one of my great uncles has passed away at the golden old age of 86. Although we’d only see each other once per year at the family reunion, I had fond memories of him. You know how family reunions can be awkward, especially when you’re a kid? Well, no worries because here would come my Uncle to ask you how things were going and make you feel totally comfortable. Plus he was a great influence for my Dad which makes him extra important.
Coincidently, I’m also reading a finance book that just got to a chapter about estate planning and wills. I’d like to ask: Does everyone have a will? If so, where did you get it from? Does using an online service like Legal Zoom actually count or would I just be writing a letter to Santa Claus?
To all my Canadian friends out there, I’m in your home-land staying at the very lovely Niagara Falls. For anyone who’s never been here before, it’s a pretty great place to visit – not just to see the Falls but also for all the activity around here! This is just a quick weekend trip for me and Mrs. MMD. Our hotel package came with a lot of dynamite extras. We’re going to try out the Maid of the Mist tour at the bottom of the Falls, wine tasting, a hypnotist show, a comedy club, spa, a few pretty nice restaurants, the casino, and a bunch of other things!
Well, wish me luck. I’m off to England today for a business trip. That’s 11 hours of travel plus a 5 hour time change. In other words, by the time I start to feel sleepy, we’ll probably be landing and it will be morning outside.
My stay there will be a little over a week. I’m going to miss my family; this will be the longest I’ve ever been away from them. Luckily, the week after I return is when we go on vacation together.
I’m hoping the hotel’s WiFi will be nice and reliable. My last hotel had very questionable Internet service. So if I disappear, sorry about that!

I’ve felt like a VERY delinquent blogger this week. My apologies to all of you who I normally visit and comment upon. Work has been extra demanding this week (with one of the big projects nearing a close), so my time has been spoken for.
We’re looking forward to the weekend! Tomorrow, the boys are going to see “The Avengers” while the girls are going to get their nails done. And we’ve got all Sunday to do whatever Mrs. MMD wants to do for Mother’s Day (including catching up on all our shows that keep piling up on our DVR). Speaking of TV shows, is anyone watching “Don’t Trust the B”? That show is hilarious!

What’s this? Am I on a boat?? Nope! That’s just me driving through my neighborhood and what it looked like after a massive rainstorm came out of nowhere! When I initially drove out of my driveway, the water was just a little deep. But the further I went along, it got deeper and deeper! I was getting a little worried and didn’t want to stop. I’m glad I didn’t stall out!
This was kind of a busy week (as you can tell since I’m a day late on my normal schedule). I was on a business trip through OH when I stumbled upon something VERY interesting! More on that to follow in Monday’s post …. I think you’ll enjoy!
In Blog news, I was finally bestowed a Google PageRank of 2! Although I’m not 100% sure how I obtained this, but I’m pretty sure that it had to do with a lot of commenting and link-backing. At the same time, my SEOmoz MozRANK increased to 2.55. My Alexa ranking has also finally fallen below 100,000. Hopefully I can continue this trend and improve my ranks in the next go-around three months from now.
Following the last post “The Value of What You Know”, I found a hilarious example to use as a follow-up and lighten the mood. What is it that this guy “knows” and is using to draw value from others? … Fighting Zombies of course!!!
That’s right! There is a place in South Jersey that is offering a “Zombie Survival Course”. The program prepares you for the “upcoming zombie apocalypse” through teaching you to shoot guns, hot wire cars, perform first aid, and even the martial arts of “Zombitsu”. So how much does it cost to learn these life-saving survival skills? Packages run anywhere from $149 to $425 per person! Click on the video to see some great footage (I apologize in advance for the advertisement in the beginning).
I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I made a little mistake last week when I ordered the 7 yards of slate stone …. I needed 3 more yards! Mrs MMD and I shoveled and spread rocks for hours and hours on Saturday only to have to make another order and finish the job on Tuesday. So after all of that, was it worth it? I think so! The landscaping looks much better than it ever has! I will have pictures once everything starts to bloom (and I get a chance to mow the lawn).
Work was BUSY this week. I unfortunately did not have as much time as I usually do to devote to preparing my articles and making my rounds to my friends’ blogs. And speaking of commitments, at least one evening during the week and our Saturdays have been assigned to our children’s soccer practice. Oh, the things we do for our kids! Off to soccer!
Sorry to make this short, but sometime this morning we’ve got 7 yards of slate stone coming. We’re going to continue our landscaping renovation with Phase 2 by spreading this stone throughout our garden beds. My back and legs just recovered from last week’s labor, so I can hardly wait to get back to it! After this we’ll be installing some electric garden lights.
