The New Oz Movie and Some Blog Updates

the new oz movieThis weekend we plan to take the kids to go see the new Oz movie.  It looks pretty good; and kind of very similar to the recent Alice in Wonderland.  The kids have been eating up all of the commercials and teasing to go see it since they first started advertising for it.

Funny story: A few months ago my son watched the original Wizard of Oz for the first time on TV.  Somewhere during the middle, I asked him how he liked it.  He said it was really good, but that you could tell it was REALLY old.  I was a little puzzled and asked him how he knew that.  He said “because they keep on singing everything”.  :)

Blog News:

I’m very excited to announce that My Money Design made it past Round 1 of the Free Money Finance March Madness competition!  My gargantuan article about our retirement plan will go on to battle against Financial Ramblings next.  Thank you to everyone who voted for me!  I really appreciate it!

Operation de-over-optimization continues to push forward.  I’ve gone back and fixed about 3 months worth of old blog posts.  There has been some benefit.  I’m noticing that a lot of old posts that had a Pagerank of “N/A” are now a PR 0 after fixing them.  The true test will come after the next big Google Pagerank update (probably in early May) when we’ll see if they truly move upward.

I haven’t really addressed this, but I hope everyone has been okay with my reduced posting frequency lately.  Rather than posting a lot of little stuff, I’ve been purposely trying to shoot for writing longer and higher quality articles.  Not that there’s anything wrong with short articles, but I want to really try to put more material out there that I feel my readers will get a lot of value out of.

On that note, if anyone has any specific topic that they want me to write about, please feel free to post a comment or shoot me an email.

Also I’ve been really enjoying the guest posts.  We had a great one this week from Tony over at You Only Do This Once.  Contact me if you’d like to do one as well.

  1. My wife really wants to see the new Oz movie. She’s excited because parts of it were filmed in Pontiac, although she didn’t care when a scene of Red Dawn featured a portion of the exterior of our friend’s house…
On the blogging front, I’d say write as much or as little as you want. Some days I feel like I “have” to write something. Then tend to be terrible posts with bad turnout. Good luck with the re-optimization of posts.

Thanks Justin. I had heard about the Pontiac thing. Although it didn’t seem to matter – the whole thing was pretty much computer generated. But still cool to have MI ties.

Thanks on the blogging advice. That’s precisely what I’m trying to avoid. I’ve felt from time to time that I wasn’t at my best, and so that also ties in with the cut back.

  2. Your raffle copter form isn’t populating for me on the first load… those always seem to be a problem!

Enjoy the movie and let us know if you like it.

  3. I hear the new OZ movie is pretty good and that they’re already talking about doing a sequel.

    • MMD says:

Interesting! It was pretty good, but I’m not sure how much opportunity there was to follow it up with a squeal. However the movie industry can seem to come up with anything these days.

  4. Michelle says:

Let us know how the movie is! I really want to see it.

It was pretty good! It was very Disney and PG. But it was kind of cool the way they developed the story as a prequel. I had heard that it was based on stories from the original book, so to me that helps with the authenticity.

Thanks Alexa! Suggestion accepted and I will do that!

Your daughter will love it. Both my kids really enjoyed it. James Franco has some pretty good one-liners for the adults.

Thanks for including me in your list! :)

  7. We watched the old OZ last year as well, on TBS I believe. My daughter got really annoyed with the commercials! We’ve become such impatient movie watchers, but I agree they are annoying. My posts all tend to be pretty long, often over 1000 words. I have been thinking about trying to find ways to shorten them, but maybe that’s the wrong idea?

    • MMD says:

      Hi Kim,

I don’t think you have wrong idea at all. After reading a lot of the more popular blogs, I’m beginning to believe that writing +1,000 word posts is probably the right thing to do. Plus I’m getting really annoyed when now when I search for some topic and only get a 400 word post. I don’t want people to feel that way when they land on my site.

I am one of those many who are all excited to see the new Oz movie. I have read so many good reviews about the movie even before the film was finished.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. They did a really good job with the story and acting – even if it was in a PG way. Sam Raimi never fails …

Congrats on the competition success! Thanks also foe the mention.

Thanks Christoper. I feel like those Disney movies have come a long ways since Pirates of Caribbean. Disney doesn’t seem as afraid to take risks anymore, and its working out well for them.

  12. That’s a funny thing about old movies right? They’re pretty cool then but when you watch it again now, they’re pretty ridiculous. lol The new one’s good too. Yeah, you can expect a sequel to that.

    Good luck with the competition.

Thanks KC. On that note, there are actually a lot of movies I used to think were incredible when I was younger or even a teenage. But now when I go back and watch them, they are really lame. :)

  13. Phenomenal news! Thanks so much for all your thoughts. Looking forward to more.

  14. eemusings says:

Oh, how was Oz? It looks interesting – might see it at some point. (I also enjoyed the newish Alice – but Tim Burton didn’t do Oz, did he?)

It’s funny how movies can date (sometimes quite quickly) but you never know what the future trends will be.

    • MMD says:

Oz was good. It was somewhat predictable (as you’d expect from a PG Disney movie), but it was an interesting add-on to the overall story. Nope, although they look the same, Tim Burton did not do this one. It was directed by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spiderman, Spartacus, etc).
