I’ve got to admit: 2012 was not a bad year as far as my passive income streams go! Before blogging and investing, I was relying on sign-up bonuses, credit card rewards, and small stuff like online surveys to make a little side cash. A lot can change in a year and half … Since taking a leap of faith on blogging and investing, I’ve made a lot more money than I ever thought I would from passive income. Blogging has by far been the front-runner with its endless possibilities of advertising, affiliate sales, writing, etc. After a lot of research, I also laid the first brick of my soon-to-be … [Read more...] about Doing a Better Job Tracking My Passive Income Streams and Retirement Savings

Want a chance to win $1,000 in cash? Keep reading and check out the free contest at the bottom of the post. So if you’re a bank, how do you reward someone who has had a bank account with you for the past 30 years or so? How about by sticking them with $11 per month account fees! Sounds like a solid business plan, right? Well, that’s exactly what my bank did! How to Lose a Life Long Customer: You read it right. The bank that I’ve used since I was a little boy called me up this week to tell me that they were involuntary switching over all their accounts in the new year, and that … [Read more...] about So Long Current Bank Account and Your New Fees – I Found a Chase Bonus Coupon!
If you haven’t already, it’s back to work! It was such a great and enjoyable break. Sometimes I think having a week off is worse than having one day off because you get far too comfortable waking up at your leisure, reading a book, drinking coffee, etc. If that wasn’t bad enough, it gets worse: Your paycheck is lower! That’s right - the take-home from your paycheck is going to be lower because as part of the Fiscal Cliff, the payroll-tax cut didn’t get extended. That means the Social Security deduction for your Federal taxes went back to 6.2% from 4.2%. It was a nice two years at the lower … [Read more...] about Welcome Back to Work – Did You Notice Your Paycheck is Lower?
I hope everyone had an outstanding Christmas! We’re really digging having the week off. I couldn’t believe how quickly the holiday flew by. Didn’t we just buy all those presents? This was the year of the Lego sets for my kids. They got just a ridiculous amount of them. Does anyone else’s kids have those Monster Fighter sets? They’re kind of cool … My Blog Updates: You would NEVER guess it, but I’ve been really busy behind the scenes working on My Money Design. Here’s a few of the things that have been going on: … [Read more...] about The Christmas Break and My Blog Updates

I was originally planning to post something fun or entertaining this weekend for my usual wrap up. But given the recent events with the Connecticut school shooting, I really didn’t feel very comfortable doing so. Instead, let’s take a moment of silence to extend our hearts out to those who were affected by this hideous tragedy. … [Read more...] about A Moment of Silence for the Connecticut School Shooting
Do you see that thing over on the left? That is the Lego Star Wars Death Star, and it’s what my son wants for Christmas (among a thousand other things). It’s pretty amazing as far as Lego sets go; capturing several different scenes from the Star Wars movies into one toy. However, it also costs around $380. (It was $400, but they kindly knocked the price down for Christmas). That is pretty ridiculous; even for a Lego set. Plus it is way over the limit my wife and I are prepared to spend for each of our kids. While picking up my kids from school, I tried to explain to my son that I don’t … [Read more...] about Figuring Out the Operational Cost for Santa’s Christmas Presents
Did we really just quote some Dickens’ to open this post? A Christmas Carol was always one of my favorite Christmas stories, but that’s not what’s got me thinking about this topic. This week I was trying to clean off some of the broken links from my site in hopes of FINALLY raising my Google Page Rank score in the next update. While running the link checker, I kept noticing the same trend of broken links popping up in the results window: Past personal finance bloggers. Yes, if you really want to bum yourself out, go visit your post archive from about a year ago, and look at the names of … [Read more...] about Ghosts of Personal Finance Bloggers Past
Happy Thanksgiving weekend everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying some time off, taking it easy, and loving big helpings of home cooked meals. Within our family, we host Thanksgiving at our house. So Thursday was a pretty big occasion for us. Mrs MMD out-did herself again and cooked an outstandingly delicious assortment of food. While visiting, we also managed to find a pretty hilarious Thanksgiving song. Someone auto-tuned a remix of the William Shatner Deep Fried Turkey public service announcement from last year (which by itself is also kind of ridiculous in its own way). Enjoy: … [Read more...] about Happy Thanksgiving and William Shatner Deep Fried Turkey
This week I was pretty bad at blogging again; but with good reason. I spent the first part of the week on a business trip in Texas. The weather down there was nice and I had a lot of fun working with my colleagues. But unfortunately when you travel your hours and WiFi availability tend to get pretty spotty, so I didn’t spend as much time online as I normally do. But I was able to make use of my flight time by doodling some much needed future post ideas in a notebook. So with my travels, that brings me to my question: How much airport shopping do people really do? … [Read more...] about How Much Do People Really Do Airport Shopping?
