So long old friend. We had some good times, you and I. You were always so good to me, but now things have changed, and it’s time to say goodbye.
It’s not you, it’s me! I just can’t pay close to $20 a month for movies anymore. And this new plan of splitting between DVD’s and streaming online. I love them both too much to choose between them.
I don’t blame you for raising your prices. “The Man” (your streaming services) raised your costs big-time, and now you’re just passing it along to the little guy (me). But every product in the world has competition, and unfortunately there’s a lot of other places out there to catch DVD’s.
I still remember the day we met. I had just had another encounter with some young, snotty Blockbuster employee. I came home, got on the computer, and learned about your $5/month introductory plan. Was it too good to be true?
Oh, like a dream. No more waiting in lines, never having my movie in stock, paying late fees! Late fees!!! It’s been forever since I’ve paid a late fee. They’re just a distant memory to me now. You would never charge me late fees. Sometimes I’d let a movie sit for a whole month before I’d get the chance to watch it. But you never cared. You just said “It’s all right, send it back when you’re done”.
You were always so easy to get along with. It wasn’t long before I needed you more and more. I upgraded to the $9 / month plan and was introduced to your unlimited streaming option. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before! Pick any movie or TV show you want and you’ll have it in a matter of seconds. Blu-ray’s came shortly after that.
I want you to know that every time I get the mail, I will think of you and your bright red envelope. The way I used to get so excited to open it only to find a great new release like “The Hangover” or “Inception”.
Now those good times are gone and I’m afraid I’ll be logging on today to cancel my account. I wish you good luck, and I hope you can find a way to cope with those new outrageous operating costs. Maybe one day you’ll figure it out, and our paths can meet once again.
If you need me, I’ll be at the Redbox renting my next DVD for $1.
