Weekend Wind Down 8/04/2012

August is here and that means the Summer is quickly coming to an end! Didn’t it just start? I’m glad my wife encouraged me to put together a fire pit this Summer. Friday nights have been becoming our un-wind time to build a fire and leave the stress of the work week behind.

Mrs. MMD and I wanted to do something special for the kids this weekend so we’re taking them to their favorite store – Build-A-Bear – this weekend. But don’t tell them – it’s a surprise!

Has anyone watched “The Woman in Black”? It started off slow … then got really, really freaky …. Then ended very predictably ….

Blog News:

Aren’t we due for another Google PageRank round? When you’re like me and you’re only at a “2”, you really don’t have anywhere else to go but up!

I’m quickly coming up on my silent one-year blogging anniversary.  Next week we’ll begin by taking one of my first posts, a review of the great Rich Dad Poor Dad book (to which my review was not very well written) and finally give it a review worth some justice!

At Jeremy’s suggestion from Modest Money (whom was just recently a TV star – nice job!), I started using an RSS reader to keep up with all my blogging homies. And surprisingly, I’m learning that A LOT of you post WAY MORE often than I thought! Am I the only lame duck who posts 3 times a week? (Really 2 if you don’t count my weekly wrap up …)

Blogs You Should Check Out:

In case you missed them, here are a few great stories you should check out this weekend:

• If you post a story about your guitar, I’m going to notice! So there’s no coincidence how much I liked “A Dusty Guitar” by See Debt Run. Aside from the guitar, I liked the underlying story of growing up and facing reality.  I feel I’ve had to do the same …

• Along the same lines, you can lament your lost life or see it as an opportunity to seize something better. That’s why I liked “Quarter Life Crisis Or Quarter Life Opportunity?” by Budget Blonde.  She’s not going down without a fight!

• We all know that Shilpan at Street Smart Finance can write, but did you know that he’s been blogging for longer than we think? Who knew? Check out “Why I Blog and Why You Should, Too“

• Girl’s got your back! Nell at Housewife Empire comes to the defense of Crystal’s new book at Budgeting in the Fun Stuff with her post “Shakin’ Off Haters – One Jerk at a Time”. Crystal has made me some very real money, so anyone not willing to listen to her advice is missing out!

Carnivals:

MyMoneyDesign was featured in the following personal finance carnivals this week:

  • Yakezie Carnival – More than just money – Kylie Ofiu

You’re welcome! I was surprised to learn that BIFS is at a PageRank of 0. What’s up with that?

I personally post 4 times a week with a round up on Saturday so 3 “real” posts if you don’t include those. RSS reader has made my life much easier 🙂

The RSS Reader has been an incredible time saver this week! I’m not sure how I got around without it!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but we did have a PR update last week…

I got bumped up to a 2, finally. Mr. Lance from ML & More got an awesome PR4 because of some links from Budgets are Sexy and MSN.

Just keep working hard and hopefully you’ll get to 3 along with me in the next update! (At least I’m hoping I’ll become a 3). It’s great that you’re starting to use the reader; I started using one about 3 months ago and it’s helped a ton!

Wha, wha, whaaa (dying trumpet sound ….) Well, thanks anyways Jason. I do appreciate the news. I’m glad for you and Lance. I guess for me not dropping down from a PR 2 is still pretty good.

It does take a lot of work to build up PR for a blog. Most of the links you get quickly slip into a blog’s archives. So you really need to get links consistently and from some high PR blogs. Mostly it comes down to how active you are.

As for posting frequency, I actually do the same pace as you, but I use lots of guest posts on other days. Before I started accepting guest posts I stuck with the 2 posts + 1 update post per week.

    And thanks for the mention!

Thanks Jeremy! It looks like I’ll have to network out a little bit better. This is good advice – thanks for helping me out again!

I’m still at a PR 2 like you. I thought it would go up to a 3 (at least that’s what the prdiction thing said). I know there are things I need to continue to work on, though, to help my cause. I haven’t heard of “The Woman In Black”, but then I rarely keep up with movies and tv shows. I only just recently started the first season of Mad Men on Netflix.

      At least we’re not PR1’s.

The Woman in Black is one with Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) where its the 1800’s and he’s a lawyer who has to investigate an old house that is haunted. It gets pretty scary in parts, but the ending could have been better.

Now, I feel bad that I don’t even post twice a week. Lately, it’s been just a single post a week. Ouch! It’s tough to balance with my work, business and the blog. Thanks for the mention, MMD. I am humbled!

There have been many weeks where I’ve considered dropping back to 1 post! I’m with you – sometimes real work just gets too much in the way!

Thanks Holly! The movie is worth the $1 from RedBox – you’ll like the middle where it starts getting extra freaky and scary!

A-a-a! Happy Birthday! I think three times a week is a good number;-) But what really matters is what you post, not how often!;-)

Thanks Maria and welcome to the site! I agree that quality comes before quantity. I’ve been trying to make my posts more into something that people could refer back to.

Thank you so much for mentioning my guitar post, and I am thrilled that you enjoyed it so much..

I can’t believe that you made it a year without using an RSS Reader to follow your favorite blogs.. I don’t know how I would ever get by without one!! 🙂

As long as you keep on working at it, I don’t see how it could get much worse! Good luck in 3 months when they do the next one!
